In September just like at the beginning of a new year, I tend to pick new goals that I want to achieve and therefore to take new habits. Today I’m gonna give you 5 tips to help you keep them over time !

  1. Choose a goal that is achievable: This year I decided to take the French equivalent of A levels, this goal is achievable for me because I won’t be working this year and I will have time to study regularly until June, month of the exam. If your goal is to get back into a workout routine after long sedentary years, don’t tell yourself that you will exercise an hour and a half everyday, you would risk to be quickly discouraged and to give up.
  2. Break your goals into smaller ones: It’s always hard to find motivation when the task you have to achieve seems bigger than you. Instead make small goals towards the big one, You wouldn't’ start a book at eleven at night thinking you have to finish it before you sleep, instead you only read a couple of chapters. Progress can and will happen overnight if you focus on the little things.
  3. Make a routine for yourself: It has been proved that it helps the brain to get ready for a certain task. For example, just before I go to bed, I drink an infusion then brush my teeth. After a few weeks of these repeated actions, I found that falling asleep became a lot easier and faster for me. Another example, before I start writing, I always turn on some classical music for background noise, I also noticed that I am now more productive when I do so than when I don’t.
  4. Stimulate your senses: To manage to do something very regularly, it’s better to enjoy it, this is when your five senses come in handy. If your goal is to run more, buying yourself a new colourful outfit may make you more susceptible to want to go, just like making yourself a new playlist to listen to while you run surely will make the whole experience more enjoyable.
  5. Do not forget to reward yourself every once in a while and to rest ! Taking time for yourself is essential. Why not plan to have a lovely bath with scented candles burning around, to go to the restaurant or to take a day off after one of your achievements ? It would also be ridiculous to hope to achieve your goals without resting, make pauses, breathe, sleep well. Your health always comes first !

I hope these tips will help you in some way, and I wish a great school year to all those of you who are still going ! I’m looking forward to sharing a rather autumnal recipe with you next Saturday...

  5. I love #2. I think we always go for bigger goals and when we do that, we fail to see how we get there. We're too much fixated on the goal itself.
    Thanks for sharing this Charlie!
